From 2021 to 2025, David Dewar served as New Zealand Trade Commissioner for the Pacific. Based at the New Zealand High Commission in Suva, David's role oversaw support for New Zealand exporters across more than 20 markets in the Pacific region, including particularly in the fields of infrastructure development and related industries.

Prior to assuming the Trade Commissioner role in August 2021, David was NZTE’s Pacific Project Lead leading NZTE’s Pacific strategy, and the re-establishment of a resident trade
commission for the region.

Before his role as Trade Commissioner, David had a 13-year diplomatic career with the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade,
including three diplomatic postings in Europe and Australia.

Other previous roles have included working on New Zealand’s WTO and FTA trade negotiations; the Australia-New Zealand Single Economic Market; and New Zealand’s relationship with the ten ASEAN nations. David has a passion for international trade, economic policy integration, and business and investment strategy.

Originally from the Hutt Valley in Wellington, New Zealand, David holds a Bachelor of Laws degree with Honours and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Canterbury. He also holds a Graduate Certificate in Economics from the Australian National University.
