Thomas Schmitz is a senior energy executive with more than 26 years’ experience in renewable energy, energy trading, infrastructure investment and market strategy across Australia, Asia and Europe.
As General Manager, Energy Markets at Aquila Clean Energy APAC, Thomas leads commercial strategy, revenue optimisation, market engagement and power-market activities across Aquila’s renewable energy and storage portfolio in Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Korea.
Previously, Thomas held senior roles at Equis Australia, Goldwind Australia and the European Energy Exchange, as well as global energy and financial institutions including Enron, Deutsche Bank, BNP Paribas and BHP Billiton.
Thomas has played a key role in developing several landmark Australian renewable energy projects, including the 511 MW Stockyard Hill Wind Farm, the 800+ MW Clarke Creek Wind Farm and the 600 MW / 1,600 MWh Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub. He has also negotiated numerous innovative PPAs and battery offtake arrangements across Australia’s NEM and New Zealand’s electricity market, where Aquila is developing a significant portfolio of solar, wind and battery projects.
Thomas holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Melbourne and is admitted as a legal practitioner of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory.
